J.J. White Helps Construct Hospital's Future

Situation

Cooper University Hospital was in need of significant renovations to its facilities, including the construction of South Jersey’s first pediatric care unit. The Hospital sought a construction manager that was sensitive to the design needs of a child-friendly environment. J.J. White was selected as the construction manager for the pediatric unit, but the contractor for each of the other renovations was undecided when the pediatric unit work began.

Challenges

As the first facility of its kind in South Jersey, the 50,000 sq. ft. pediatric care unit had to be state-of-the-art and versatile; J.J. White’s work had to be durable and functional. In addition, J.J. White’s work needed to be sensitive to the hospital environment, and had to avoid upsetting the everyday routine.

Solutions

J.J. White’s extensive experience with institutional construction projects prepared them well for this job. By working closely with Cooper University Hospital staff, J.J. White was able to design a construction schedule that fit the hospital’s requirements. Work began and finished on-time and on-budget.

Results

Cooper University Hospital was so impressed with the work that it selected J.J. White as the Construction Managers for the addition and renovation of space for their Radiation and Oncology areas, as well as their Emergency Department and Trauma Center. J.J. White’s flexibility enabled Cooper’s trauma center to remain open and functioning during the entire 18-month construction process. J.J. White collaborated with a group of 26 subcontractors to finish the job, showing a talent for coordination and flexibility. Cooper University Hospital is now equipped with facilities that allow for state-of-the-art care for each of its patients. The hospital’s work was barely disrupted by the construction and is better equipped to serve South Jersey.
