J.J. White Helps the Philadelphia Inquirer

The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia, PA

Situation

After a request by the Philadelphia Inquirer, J.J. White performed an analysis of the paper’s malfunctioning DDC System. This faulty system was not coordinating the automatic operation of the building’s boilers or AHU’s, and was not properly cooling the office and production facilities. The system was increasing the operating costs for the paper and causing discomfort for employees.

Challenges

J.J. White’s mission was to conduct a thorough analysis of the HVAC system and make any necessary repairs without disrupting the operation of the paper or damaging any of the production equipment.

Solutions

J.J. White’s analysis found that the system’s manufacturer was no longer in business and replacement parts for its units were unavailable. As a result, J.J. White recommended the installation of a new Honeywell Excel 5000 Open System. The Inquirer agreed with the recommendation, and J.J. White planned the system installation in phases to cause the smallest possible disruption to the paper’s operations.

Results

The Inquirer’s new HVAC system significantly reduced operating costs for the publisher, as the AHU’s, pumps, and boilers all worked properly and in sequence. The manpower needed to operate the system was also reduced, further cutting costs.
