J.J. White Helps Verizon Chester B Switching Station

Verizon Chester B Switching Station, Chester, PA

Situation

The HVAC equipment serving Verizon’s Chester B switching station was antiquated and in constant need of maintenance. The existing equipment was barely sufficient to handle current capacity, and had no redundancy in case of a failure.

Challenges

This switching station is a major point of telephone call routing in Southeastern Pennsylvania, and could not afford any downtime. All work had to be completed in the most unobtrusive manner possible. J.J. White also recognized that the equipment housed at this facility was both extremely expensive and in need of a specific environment with tight tolerances regarding temperature and humidity.

Solutions

It was determined that two 60-ton chillers with remote air-cooled condensers would be adequate to handle the heat load of the space and provide 100% redundancy in case of failure. Due to limited space, the new equipment needed to be installed in place of existing equipment without interrupting phone service. J.J. White installed two 30-ton split system air conditioning systems to handle the heat load while the renovation was in progress. The entire project was performed during normal daytime working hours in a fully functioning environment, with no change in the routine of Verizon’s personnel.

Results

An updated HVAC system was installed at the facility, decreasing both operating costs and the associated cost of manpower to repair the old system. No downtime was experienced by the facility, and work was done with a minimum amount of disruption. J.J. White’s foresight enabled its employees to stop any possible problems before they started.
