J.J. White Renovates Local Communications Hub

Verizon Communications Center, Wayne, PA

Situation

Verizon needed an entirely new building for its co-location needs to be built on the existing site in historic Wayne. The job required the demolition of half the existing structure, while maintaining the reinforced concrete roof and underground communications ductbank.

Challenges

The Wayne site controls telecommunications needs covering an 80-mile radius of Philadelphia. The cables that run through the site must be protected continuously, and the building’s security regulations demand that it be constructed of reinforced concrete from underground vault to roof. In addition, the zoning and township regulations must be upheld to the tiniest detail, including matching the fencing and landscaping to the surrounding neighborhood’s design. Also challenging were the 80 Verizon employees working in the existing part of the building.

Solutions

Thanks to J.J. White’s 80 plus years of construction experience, the challenges posed by this project were easily surmountable. J.J. White’s team of specialized superintendents and project managers have been with the company for an average of 20 years, and have experience in every area of construction. In addition, because of J.J. White’s legacy of quality and integrity, the company is one of the few in the region that pre-qualifies for highly regulated work, like that required by Verizon. Because of this experience, J.J. White was able to do all of the extensive concrete work on the site itself. J.J. White’s project manager completed all work in strict conformance to township and zoning regulations, and scheduled the construction team to work around the Verizon employees in the existing building, all while keeping to the projected timeline.

Results

Verizon’s satisfaction with J.J. White has broadened the scope of work to 3 other contracts.
