Winter Weather Slips, Trips and Falls Safety

Winter Weather Slips, Trips and Falls

Injuries due to slips and falls are often associated with winter weather.  We want to take a moment to discuss what you can do to prevent becoming the next injury.

This is the time of year when you cannot take any walking surface for granted.  Ice, snow, black ice, potholes, wet surfaces, etc. are all hazards we have to be aware of and manage to prevent further slip and fall incidents.

Our first line of defense is to remove snow and ice as soon as possible after a storm.  Our snow removal crews work hard to remove snow and salt the roads, parking lots and walkways in the refinery and office buildings.  However, 100 percent removal is near impossible and the thaw/refreeze cycle is continuously adding to the hazards.

We all must be aware of our surroundings and take necessary precautions.  When possible, avoid snow and iced areas.  Do not forget to check above you, as there are icicle hazards as well.  When walking on slippery surfaces, cut your normal stride down to maintain better balance and always use available handrails.

The use of “Grips” – an over boot that slips over your work boot – are available for your use.  They provide extra traction and are a good option for when you have to work outside in snow and ice conditions.

If you see icy conditions on walkways, please take the time to put ice melt down.  If there are areas that need attention from the snow removal crews or additional salting, please contact your supervisor.

We have winter weather ahead of us.  Protect yourself against the elements and PLEASE WATCH YOUR STEP!
