Sound Rigging Practices

Nylon slings

  • Inspect slings prior to use.  Burns or chemical stained slings should not be used as it compromises the integrity of the sling.  Abrasions must be examined carefully.  Many new slings do not have the tell tail “red cord” that would show in damaged areas.  IF there’s any doubt whether it can be used, don’t use it. Contact your foreman or the safety department for guidance.
  • Select the proper sling for the intended use (capacity, length, width, etc.).
  • When using a nylon sling around sharp edged objects (e.g. structural steel), softeners must be used.  Softeners can be any material that prevents damage to the sling.
  • Never use nylon slings on hot pipes or objects.  Nylon slings melt!

Metal chokers

  • Inspect chokers prior to use.  Frayed or kinked chokers must be carefully examined prior to use.  IF there’s any doubt whether it can be used, don’t use it. Contact your foreman or the safety department for guidance.
  • Select the proper choker for the intended use (weight capacity, length, etc.).
  • When using a metal choker around sharp edged objects (e.g. structural steel), softeners must be used.  This prevents kinks and damage to the choker.  Softeners can be any material that prevents damage to the choker.

Cumalong-lever puller

  • Select the proper hoist for the intended use (weight capacity).  The capacity of the hoist should be well in excess of the intended load.
  • Never use a hoist for lifting, supporting or transporting people.
  • Inspect your hoist prior to each use.  Replaced damaged or missing latches.  The mechanism should work smoothly and the chain must be free rust or corrosion.  If there’s any doubt, TAKE IT OUT!
  • Never wrap the load chain around the load or choke the chain around a load!

**** No one should EVER be under a load for any reason. ****
