JJ White’s Mechanical Team Undertakes Major HVAC Overhaul at Gillin Boathouse

JJ White is spearheading a significant HVAC renovation project at the Robert M. Gillin, Jr. Boathouse, home to the rowing programs of Saint Joseph’s University and Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School. The renovation, which began in earnest this summer, is scheduled to wrap up by January 2025.

The scope of the project includes the removal and replacement of six existing split-system heat pumps, a critical update to ensure optimal comfort and energy efficiency for the boathouse’s year-round activities. Due to the continuous training schedules of the rowing teams, the work will be executed in two phases to minimize disruption to the programs.

The Gillin Boathouse, located on Philadelphia’s historic Boathouse Row along the Schuylkill River, has served as the hub for Saint Joseph’s men’s and women’s rowing programs since its dedication in June 2002. The 15,540-square-foot facility, set against the backdrop of the iconic Strawberry Mansion Bridge, provides storage space for the sculls, as well as locker rooms, showers, team meeting areas, and training spaces.

The HVAC overhaul is set to enhance the boathouse’s comfort levels significantly, thanks to state-of-the-art equipment and advanced control systems being installed. These upgrades will not only improve the indoor environment but also contribute to reducing the facility’s overall energy consumption.

“JJ White is proud to contribute to the Gillin Boathouse’s continued success and comfort,” said JJ White Executive Vice President George Packer. “We’re committed to delivering a solution that supports the boathouse’s operational needs while also aligning with modern standards for energy efficiency.”

With the project’s phased approach, JJ White ensures that the boathouse remains operational throughout the renovation period, allowing Saint Joseph’s rowing teams to maintain their rigorous training schedules without interruption. The updated HVAC systems are expected to be fully functional by early 2025, enhancing the overall experience for athletes, staff, and visitors alike.

Our commitment to supporting local institutions reflects JJ White’s broader dedication to the community. By investing in high-quality, energy-efficient solutions, JJ White aims to contribute to the long-term sustainability and success of places like the Gillin Boathouse.
