Employee Spotlight: Ron Benson
Celebrating 44 Years of Dedication and Growth at JJ White
This month, we shine a spotlight on Ron Benson, who has been an invaluable part of the JJ White family for an impressive 44 years. With a rich history of growth and leadership within the company, Ron’s journey is a testament to the opportunities available at JJ White.
Ron joined JJ White after starting his career at the Gulf Gas Company site, which eventually became Chevron. Reflecting on his time with us, he shares, “The steady employment and the chance to advance based on performance have made a significant difference for me and my family. The opportunity to work all over the country has been incredible as well.”
Career Evolution
Beginning as a laborer, Ron quickly demonstrated his skills and dedication, advancing to Foreman and later to General Foreman during pivotal projects like the Low Sulfur Gas and Low Sulfur Diesel initiatives. His career continued to evolve as he took on the role of Superintendent, where he managed laborers and oversaw critical job functions. Today, he serves as Laborer Superintendent, responsible for ensuring that tools and resources are effectively utilized across various projects.
Memorable Projects
When asked about his favorite project, Ron highlights the LSG project, where he led a team of over 70 laborers. “It was my first major project and a significant milestone in my career,” he recalls. “Recently working alongside Mike Christie at the Wood River Refinery was particularly special, as I had the chance to reconnect with someone who has been there throughout my career.”
Pride in Accomplishments
Ron’s greatest accomplishment lies in the respect he has earned within the company. “I take pride in being a troubleshooter for Buddy Burns, Jim White, and Jim Daley,” he explains. “Being able to resolve issues and ensure smooth operations on job sites is rewarding. I’m also proud that I can support team members facing challenges, including those with substance abuse issues, helping them find the right path.”
Additionally, Ron reflects on the relationships he’s built over the years: “I’ve had the opportunity to work with three generations of the Alderman family—Fred Sr., Fred Jr., and now his two kids. I’ve also worked with Mike Christie and his sons, Mike Jr. and Sean. Bill Nolan was very young when he first started with us, and now he is the Corporate Risk Manager. I even remember when our now company President Jim Daley was selling hot dogs as an apprentice at BP! Seeing all of this growth is very special to me.”
What Sets JJ White Apart
When discussing what distinguishes JJ White from other contractors, Ron emphasizes the company’s hands-on approach. “The owners are actively involved, and there’s a genuine opportunity for advancement. JJ White prepares and grooms us for future roles, making it a unique place to work.”
