“God is in the details,” a quote attributed to renowned American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, reminds us that the smallest elements often carry the greatest impact. While rooted in architecture, the message extends far beyond design alone.
At a new, state-of-the-art gene therapy innovation center in the heart of Philadelphia’s University City, that philosophy is coming to life through the daily work of JJ White’s union craft professionals.
Steamfitter Journeyman Austin Allen is mentoring Apprentice Joe Cellini through the meticulous process of valve tagging and pipe labeling throughout the facility. At first glance, this work may appear routine. In reality, it plays a critical role in the safety, efficiency, and long-term reliability of a highly complex manufacturing environment.
Accurate labeling ensures the Owner’s operations team can immediately identify valve locations and system contents, which are necessary for safe operations, maintenance, and rapid response. In regulated life sciences facilities, these details are not optional; they are essential.
Over several months, Austin and Joe have methodically completed this effort across more than 20,000 valves and 40 miles of piping within the multi-story facility. Along the way, knowledge is passed down, standards are reinforced, and pride in craftsmanship is built.
Their work is a powerful reminder that excellence in our industry isn’t defined solely by major milestones or visible structures. It is built through mentorship, care, and an unwavering commitment to getting every detail right, because in the end, the details are what make everything else work.
